Dear Aspirante:

Since ASPIRA is a national organization working to further the interest of Hispanic youth, your desire to further your education is important to us and should be commended. The ASPIRA Association, Inc. does not currently provide financial assistance, but perhaps we can direct you to some organizations that might be able to help. In order to most effectively plan your search, you should contact the necessary organizations up to a year in advance. Your first step should be to decide on a few schools and contact their financial aid offices, asking about any scholarships or financial aid they offer to minority students. Be sure to explore all financial aid and scholarship possibilities, not just those opportunities targeted specifically towards minorities. The federal government has several major financial aid packages, work-study programs, and grants. You may contact their educational hotline at 1-(800) 433-3243.

If you live in or near Miami, Florida [2]; Chicago, Illinois [3]; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania [4]; Newark, New Jersey [5]; Bridgeport, Connecticut [6]; New York, New York [7], or Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico [8]; you may want to contact the local ASPIRA offices in those cities. They may be able to provide you with more specific information on scholarship and financial possibilities.

A novel initiative combining scholarships and internships with employment opportunities for Latinos has been launched jointly by the ASPIRA Association, Inc. and Educational Testing Service (ETS). The initiative addresses the private sector need to identify talent and the needs of Latino and other students for programs carrying them from college to good jobs.

Sí! The New American Workforce Scholarship and Internship Program is a national program that seeks to increase corporate sponsorship of scholarships and internships to identify and develop talented college students for the workforce. It is intended to increase the number of Latino and other minority students who enter and remain in college and who successfully transition from college into the corporate world.

"We are delighted to join with ETS in such an initiative," says Ronald Blackburn-Moreno, President and CEO of Washington, D.C.-based, ASPIRA. "Our national network of affiliates and other relationships will help us identify top students to apply for the scholarships and internships, and Scholarship & Recognition Programs at ETS, drawing on 50 years of experience, will administer the program."

"For the private sector this is a cost-effective operation that helps companies develop and later employ high-quality employees," says Bill McCambley, Director of Scholarship & Recognition Programs at ETS. "It establishes a learning platform that promotes strong employee relationships, increases loyalty and allows employers to observe performance."

Sí! The New American Workforce Scholarship and Internship Program services include:
-- Program design and planning -- Applicant pool development -- Verifiably fair and objective candidate review -- Academic progress and internship monitoring -- Ongoing program evaluation -- Mentor training

"The program will also help companies meet diversity requirements for federal or other contracts," adds Blackburn-Moreno. "We see this as a 'win-win' for students and employers. It progresses from identification and selection of talent to internships and development of an employee pool with prospects for reaching senior management levels. Demographic trends alone indicate that participation in the program is a wise investment."

For information about the Sí! The New American Workforce Scholarship and Internship Program contact Linda Bailey, Project Director, lbailey@ets.org [85] or at 1-609-243-6545. More information is avalable on the attached program brochure.
