Aspira y Aprende a invertir!

The goal of the initiative is the expansion of a national model for financial education and the development and implementation of investment education program for Latino youth and their families. In response to the low percentage of Latinos with investment accounts and employed in the investments industry, ASPIRA has developed this initiative designed to increase the number of Latinos investing. The proposed program goal will be accomplished by implementing the following program components:

  • Investments Curriculum: A bilingual introduction to investments curriculum (English and Spanish) for students and young adults entitled “Investments, a Resource to Reach the American Dream” to be implemented on-site and available through the Web.
  • Web-based Train-the-Trainer: A web-casting train-the-trainer program to reach 120 Latino community-based organizations in the use of the curriculum and the career awareness strategy.
  • National Dissemination Strategy: A national project dissemination strategy that will include Web-based materials dissemination, TV PSA’s and talk-show participation on HITN-TV, the first and only media conduit offering educational, enriching and empowering content to our nation's fastest growing ethnic group.

Investment Module Picture 1

Hispanics are the largest, youngest, and fastest growing minority group in the nation. With more than 44 million (including Puerto Rico), Hispanics are the second largest segment of the U.S. labor force. Business leaders throughout the country have begun to notice that Latinos, once regarded as predominantly having lower income, are fast becoming the nation’s largest population segment, with the extraordinary potential of also becoming one of its most affluent. Our community has spending power into the trillion-dollar range. It is marked by its diversity and youth. Its work ethic, combined with its sheer numbers, means Latinos could have the power to influence the entire U.S. economy in the coming years.

In order to reach the full potential of our collective capabilities, we need to become more knowledgeable in managing our finances and increase our entrepreneurship abilities.

This program was developed to introduce our community members to the world of investing. The information included is meant to teach and guide you, to start you off in the right track. It is neither a comprehensive training program nor a highly technical training. It is the beginning of a journey.

Introduction to Investment Options, Risk and Allocations

  • Log in [30] to post comments

Investment PictureWe already learned that financial planning is nothing but defining your goals and identify the steps you must take to help make them a reality.

What you first need to figure out...

What are the steps you need to take to reach your goals? Is your wish to retire with a sound lump sum amount or do you want a steady monthly income. Is your son's education or daughters' marriage worrying you? The key is to figure out your goals and what will be needed financially to accomplish them.

Why investing and not just save? You should invest so that your money grows and shields you against rising inflation. If prices rise by four per cent annually it would not be sufficient if your savings only give you a return of three per cent. It leaves you with a deficit of one per cent. The idea is that your rate of return on investments should be greater than the rate of inflation, leaving you with a nice surplus over a period of time.

Whether your money is invested in stocks, bonds, mutual funds or certificates of deposit (CD), the end result is to create wealth for retirement, marriage, college fees, vacations, better standard of living or to just pass on the money to the next generation. Also, it's exciting to review your investment returns and to see how they are accumulating at a faster rate than your salary.

This module will help you determine some of the first steps for reaching your financial goals through investing.

Investing in the Future of Your Children: Their Education

Baby PictureIf you're the proud parent of a newborn or young child, congratulations! We are sure that you want a bright future for your baby; but you've probably heard the depressing estimate of the cost of a college education when your child is ready to enter college 18 years from now. The cost of four years in a public college is expected to be in excess of $100,000; a private school, over $200,000. Shocked? But this is reality. How can you plan for this? This module will help you define a plan.

Beach PictureTo accomplish your goal of having a financially stable retirement you need to carefully plan your investments and start as early as possible. No longer can you only depend on Social Security income alone. Other forms of income will be necessary to cover your future financial needs. As in any investment strategy, you will need to explore the options available to you from your employer and from other forms of personal investment options. As in any investment strategy, it is important to diversify your investments to secure your future.

In this module you will learn your investments options, including Social Security, employer programs, individual retirement accounts and other options. In addition, you will learn how you could save on taxes by investing for your retirement.

Short-Term and Long-Term Investments Options

  • Log in [45] to post comments

Coffee Cup with Dollar SignThere are a variety of different types of investments available today... there are short-term investments, long-term investments, and as many different investment strategies as there are investors. If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of investing and are unsure of whether you should invest in short-term or long-term plans, don't let yourself get bent out of shape.

By simply taking the time to compare the benefits and drawbacks of both short-term and long-term investments, you can determine which type is best for you and your current financial needs. Remember, your first step should be defining your financial goals, and then you will be able to decide what investment strategies will better support your goals.

In this module in addition to providing you with the drawbacks and advantages of short- and long-term investments, we will provide you with pertinent information that can assist you in making decisions about your finances... both for now, and in the future.

Are Your Investments Working The Way You Expected?

  • Log in [50] to post comments

GraphInvesting is an interesting business, full of paradoxes and strange twists that often confuse and mislead newcomers. Even casual observers are probably familiar with the contrary market behavior often associated with good economic news, and vice versa. Those experienced in the ways of Wall Street also know that being early and being wrong look the same. Mistakes and opportunities can also look very similar. Perhaps oddest of all — in order to do well, you have to do poorly. The failure to understand this — one of the most basic facts of investment life — is probably the single most important cause of genuinely poor results, excessive risk taking, high costs, and wasted brainpower in the investment business.

This module will help you to understand how to assess if your investments are working the way you expected.

Investment Industry Regulators and Investment Protection

Two Men Shaking handsWe hope this never happens to you: You are working from home today, so you decide to go online to check your brokerage account information. Something strange happened, your account balance is much lower than you expect - and you know that, at least for today, neither the market nor any of your securities fell in value. For your surprise, you noticed that there were several wire transfers of money from your account to a foreign bank account. But you never authorized those transactions - instead, an identity thief did, and that thief has now stolen your cash as well as your personal information. Now what?...

Like many investors, you may enjoy some of the conveniences of an online brokerage account, like checking your brokerage account information at any time of day or night, buying and selling securities, or even transferring money between your brokerage account and another account. But if you don't take steps to protect your personal information when you go online, you could be telling your own story of identity theft. This module will help you recognize the function of the investment industry regulators, some of the basic principles to protect your investment from fraud and recognize what to do to prevent identity theft.

This module will help you recognize what needs to be done in order to protect your investments from fraud.

Investments Program Evaluation and Forms

  • Log in [60] to post comments

Man with hands in air questioningParticipants Data Acquisition It is very important for us as a first step into assessing the effectiveness of any program to first know who we are serving, thus collecting basic demographical information about our programs participants is important. In your first program session please use the Intake Form, make sufficient copies and ask every participant to complete the form, take the completed forms to the ASPIRA office to enter them on our on-line client data base system. In addition, please ask participants to complete the General Release form. This release is necessary for using photographs taken during the training for program reports or program marketing. Program Assessment Central to the evaluation of any educational program are the instruments and procedures used to assess that program's effects. For the purpose of evaluating participants’ acquisition of new knowledge as a result of this program, we have chosen two types of assessments strategies:

  • Informal learning assessment techniques;
  • Participants attitudinal changes towards investing

Informal learning assessment: For the purpose of our program the term informal assessment will be defined as techniques that can easily be incorporated into classroom routines and learning activities. Informal assessment techniques can be used at anytime without interfering with instructional time. Their results are indicative of the student's performance on the skill or subject of interest. Unlike standardized tests, they are not intended to provide a comparison to a broader group beyond the students in the local project. Because ASPIRA programs are not intended to “grade” participants we are more concern about the skill development and the acquisition of new knowledge base on the proposed learning objectives of each learning activity. Informal assessment is not casual or lacking in rigor. Formal tests assume a single set of expectations for all students and come with prescribed criteria for scoring and interpretation. Informal assessment, on the other hand, requires a clear understanding of the levels of ability the students bring with them. Only then may assessment activities be selected that students can attempt reasonably. Informal assessment seeks to identify the strengths and needs of individual students without regard to grade or age norms. For more information about informal educational assessment please read the enclosed article. Each of the program modules are divided in lessons (see Facilitators Manuals). Some lessons include exercises, but all lesson plans include Informal Learning Assessment questions. As a facilitator is your responsibility to ensure that each of the participants answer those questions to ascertain that he or she understood and assimilated the proposed learning objective. In addition, at the end of each module you should ask participants to evaluate the activity by using the “Workshop Evaluation Form”. After completing the entire curriculum the facilitator should ask participants to complete the “Program Evaluation Form”. The program management team will use the information provided by participants on these forms to revise program content and implementation as necessary. Participants attitudinal changes:One of the program participants selection criteria is the fact that they are not currently involved in any type of investment activity. Our goal is that at the end of the program they will express their interest of engaging in investment activities, then we will know that we have accomplished our goal.
