Event Date: Saturday, January 16th, 2010
Event Time: 11:30am to 7:30pm
Event Location: John Jay College of Criminal Justice – Haaren Hall
Address: 899 Tenth Avenue

Event Background:

Since 1993, ASPIRA of New York has hosted the annual City Youth Conference. Organized primarily by the youth participating in ASPIRA’s Leadership Clubs, the conference was designed to address educational, cultural and social issues from a student perspective. Students attended two workshop sessions (one in the morning and one in the afternoon) ranging in subject from gender, health and political issues to workshops on college and career planning. The various workshops were chosen by the youth coordinating the conference and feature guest speakers and facilitators, many of who volunteer their time to speak and interact with the conference attendees. In addition to the workshops, a college fair was held featuring representatives from roughly 30-40 accredited colleges and universities who speak with students about the available degree programs at their respective school as well as answer student questions about the admissions process, financial aid and college life. Closing out the event there was an entertainment segment that features youth dancers, singers, poets and musicians performing before their peers and exercising their artistic and creative talents.  About ASPIRA: Founded in 1961 to combat the high dropout rate among Puerto Rican youth in New York City, ASPIRA of New York has a 48-year history specializing in leadership development and educational advancement for Latino youth. The leadership capacity of our youth is developed by engaging them in weekly after school leadership club meetings guided by the ASPIRA Process of Leadership Development:

Awareness:   Cultural and Self Awareness - The discovery of self-value and value of others.
Analysis:           Critical Thinking - The process of finding out about ourselves, about other cultures, and about the world around us.
Action:              Social Action - The process of putting the knowledge and skills one has acquired to use for the benefit of self and others, especially of one’s family and community.

The purpose of these leadership clubs is to provide a forum for youth to become aware of their culture and community while developing their leadership skills and advancing academically. Through ASPIRA Clubs, students have an opportunity to express their views and appreciate the opinions of their peers on issues of their choice.
