Hispanics are the largest, youngest, and fastest growing minority group in the nation. With more than 44 million (including Puerto Rico), Hispanics are the second largest segment of the U.S. labor force. Business leaders throughout the country have begun to notice that Latinos, once regarded as predominantly having lower income, are fast becoming the nation’s largest population segment, with the extraordinary potential of also becoming one of its most affluent. Our community has spending power into the trillion-dollar range. It is marked by its diversity and youth. Its work ethic, combined with its sheer numbers, means Latinos could have the power to influence the entire U.S. economy in the coming years.
In order to reach the full potential of our collective capabilities, we need to become more knowledgeable in managing our finances and increase our entrepreneurship abilities.
This program was developed to introduce our community members to the world of investing. The information included is meant to teach and guide you, to start you off in the right track. It is neither a comprehensive training program nor a highly technical training. It is the beginning of a journey.

We already learned that financial planning is nothing but defining your goals and identify the steps you must take to help make them a reality.
What you first need to figure out...
What are the steps you need to take to reach your goals? Is your wish to retire with a sound lump sum amount or do you want a steady monthly income. Is your son's education or daughters' marriage worrying you? The key is to figure out your goals and what will be needed financially to accomplish them.
Why investing and not just save? You should invest so that your money grows and shields you against rising inflation. If prices rise by four per cent annually it would not be sufficient if your savings only give you a return of three per cent. It leaves you with a deficit of one per cent. The idea is that your rate of return on investments should be greater than the rate of inflation, leaving you with a nice surplus over a period of time.
Whether your money is invested in stocks, bonds, mutual funds or certificates of deposit (CD), the end result is to create wealth for retirement, marriage, college fees, vacations, better standard of living or to just pass on the money to the next generation. Also, it's exciting to review your investment returns and to see how they are accumulating at a faster rate than your salary.
This module will help you determine some of the first steps for reaching your financial goals through investing.

If you're the proud parent of a newborn or young child, congratulations! We are sure that you want a bright future for your baby; but you've probably heard the depressing estimate of the cost of a college education when your child is ready to enter college 18 years from now. The cost of four years in a public college is expected to be in excess of $100,000; a private school, over $200,000. Shocked? But this is reality. How can you plan for this? This module will help you define a plan.

To accomplish your goal of having a financially stable retirement you need to carefully plan your investments and start as early as possible. No longer can you only depend on Social Security income alone. Other forms of income will be necessary to cover your future financial needs. As in any investment strategy, you will need to explore the options available to you from your employer and from other forms of personal investment options. As in any investment strategy, it is important to diversify your investments to secure your future.
In this module you will learn your investments options, including Social Security, employer programs, individual retirement accounts and other options. In addition, you will learn how you could save on taxes by investing for your retirement.

There are a variety of different types of investments available today... there are short-term investments, long-term investments, and as many different investment strategies as there are investors. If you find yourself a bit overwhelmed by the prospect of investing and are unsure of whether you should invest in short-term or long-term plans, don't let yourself get bent out of shape.
By simply taking the time to compare the benefits and drawbacks of both short-term and long-term investments, you can determine which type is best for you and your current financial needs. Remember, your first step should be defining your financial goals, and then you will be able to decide what investment strategies will better support your goals.
In this module in addition to providing you with the drawbacks and advantages of short- and long-term investments, we will provide you with pertinent information that can assist you in making decisions about your finances... both for now, and in the future.

Investing is an interesting business, full of paradoxes and strange twists that often confuse and mislead newcomers. Even casual observers are probably familiar with the contrary market behavior often associated with good economic news, and vice versa. Those experienced in the ways of Wall Street also know that being early and being wrong look the same. Mistakes and opportunities can also look very similar. Perhaps oddest of all — in order to do well, you have to do poorly. The failure to understand this — one of the most basic facts of investment life — is probably the single most important cause of genuinely poor results, excessive risk taking, high costs, and wasted brainpower in the investment business.
This module will help you to understand how to assess if your investments are working the way you expected.

We hope this never happens to you: You are working from home today, so you decide to go online to check your brokerage account information. Something strange happened, your account balance is much lower than you expect - and you know that, at least for today, neither the market nor any of your securities fell in value. For your surprise, you noticed that there were several wire transfers of money from your account to a foreign bank account. But you never authorized those transactions - instead, an identity thief did, and that thief has now stolen your cash as well as your personal information. Now what?...
Like many investors, you may enjoy some of the conveniences of an online brokerage account, like checking your brokerage account information at any time of day or night, buying and selling securities, or even transferring money between your brokerage account and another account. But if you don't take steps to protect your personal information when you go online, you could be telling your own story of identity theft. This module will help you recognize the function of the investment industry regulators, some of the basic principles to protect your investment from fraud and recognize what to do to prevent identity theft.
This module will help you recognize what needs to be done in order to protect your investments from fraud.

Participants Data Acquisition It is very important for us as a first step into assessing the effectiveness of any program to first know who we are serving, thus collecting basic demographical information about our programs participants is important. In your first program session please use the Intake Form, make sufficient copies and ask every participant to complete the form, take the completed forms to the ASPIRA office to enter them on our on-line client data base system. In addition, please ask participants to complete the General Release form. This release is necessary for using photographs taken during the training for program reports or program marketing. Program Assessment Central to the evaluation of any educational program are the instruments and procedures used to assess that program's effects. For the purpose of evaluating participants’ acquisition of new knowledge as a result of this program, we have chosen two types of assessments strategies:
Informal learning assessment: For the purpose of our program the term informal assessment will be defined as techniques that can easily be incorporated into classroom routines and learning activities. Informal assessment techniques can be used at anytime without interfering with instructional time. Their results are indicative of the student's performance on the skill or subject of interest. Unlike standardized tests, they are not intended to provide a comparison to a broader group beyond the students in the local project. Because ASPIRA programs are not intended to “grade” participants we are more concern about the skill development and the acquisition of new knowledge base on the proposed learning objectives of each learning activity. Informal assessment is not casual or lacking in rigor. Formal tests assume a single set of expectations for all students and come with prescribed criteria for scoring and interpretation. Informal assessment, on the other hand, requires a clear understanding of the levels of ability the students bring with them. Only then may assessment activities be selected that students can attempt reasonably. Informal assessment seeks to identify the strengths and needs of individual students without regard to grade or age norms. For more information about informal educational assessment please read the enclosed article. Each of the program modules are divided in lessons (see Facilitators Manuals). Some lessons include exercises, but all lesson plans include Informal Learning Assessment questions. As a facilitator is your responsibility to ensure that each of the participants answer those questions to ascertain that he or she understood and assimilated the proposed learning objective. In addition, at the end of each module you should ask participants to evaluate the activity by using the “Workshop Evaluation Form”. After completing the entire curriculum the facilitator should ask participants to complete the “Program Evaluation Form”. The program management team will use the information provided by participants on these forms to revise program content and implementation as necessary. Participants attitudinal changes:One of the program participants selection criteria is the fact that they are not currently involved in any type of investment activity. Our goal is that at the end of the program they will express their interest of engaging in investment activities, then we will know that we have accomplished our goal.

Over the past two decades, there has been an enormous entrepreneurial drive in the Hispanic business culture. As the Hispanic economy in the United States continues to grow, it is important to introduce today's Latino Youth to the landscape of new and creative business ventures. By tapping into their fresh ideas and perspectives, the Latino youth will provide the stamina and inventiveness necessary to carry the success of Hispanic-owned businesses into the 21st Century. The Aspira Entrepreneurial Leadership initiative was created to support Latino related business ventures and to assist in the development of the knowledge and skills necessary in creating such endeavors.

The Nationwide-Aspira Insurance Education Curriculum is the result of a partnership between the ASPIRA Association [121] and Nationwide Insurance [122] with the goal of developing a model, national, bilingual Financial Education Program [123] for young adults between the ages of 18 to 26. The goal of the Nationwide/ASPIRA partnership is to educate Latino youth and recent immigrants; especially those living in low-income communities, on the importance of insurance as a critical step in building long-term financial security. ASPIRA and Nationwide recognize the role insurance can play in protecting investments, generating savings, increasing ownership and building individual, family and community wealth.
This curriculum is one of the first comprehensive insurance literacy tools of its kind. It comprises five separate, stand-alone units that can be taught individually or in combination, depending on the target audience's needs. The units are: Introduction to Insurance; Auto Insurance; Renters Insurance; Homeowners Insurance and Life Insurance. Due to the complexities of the issue, health insurance is mentioned but not covered in detail. Each unit may be taught in a workshop format and lasts about one hour. Additionally, the curriculum contains the option of being broken into shorter activities that may be incorporated into existing high school or financial literacy courses.
Each unit comes complete with pre and post tests, overhead slides, handouts and detailed instructors notes that include class discussion topics and games. Instructors are encouraged to invite guest speakers from the insurance field who can answer direct questions about products. There are several opportunities to reinforce computer skills through working with Excel spreadsheets and performing Internet searches. Instructors who wish to expand on the overall financial literacy and skills of their audience can supplement the insurance curriculum with FDIC's Money Smart [124] curriculum (CD Rom included). Money Smart covers 10 major financial education topics, is brand-neutral, comes in Spanish and English, and further contributes to the overall goal of wealth development within the Latino community

Having the right kind of insurance coverage is an essential part of building a solid financial future. Insurance protects us from risk and guarantees that, once we accumulate assets, we will be able to keep them. Many teenagers and young adults may forego insurance if they view it as little more than an additional expense instead of looking at the cost of not being insured. The basic definition of insurance is risk management.
The first two activities are geared toward examining the risks associated with adulthood and preparing young people to manage them successfully. The third activity examines the most important components that make up every type of insurance: policies, coverage, limits and deductibles. In activity four, participants will be given a brief introduction to the types of insurance, and how to determine what type and how much each individual needs. Essential vocabulary words and explanations will be provided. In the final hands-on activity, participants will have an opportunity to learn about selecting the right policy through using online quote calculators to compare how plans measure up in meeting their needs.

A critical part of young adulthood is gaining independence and the power to make your own decisions. Most young people anxiously wait for the moment they will get a drivers license. The first years of young adulthood are a critical time to discuss the responsibility that comes with added independence. This lesson presents a financial reality check for young people who may be eager to embrace a new stage of their lives without the knowledge of how to begin. The information is equally important for teenagers, young adults and recent arrivals in the US, who may be already on their own, but have not yet developed solid financial skills.
This module focuses on a critical aspect of young adulthood: getting the right insurance to protect your new responsibilities as you become a driver.

The biggest investment that most families and individuals will make during their lives happens when they buy a home and realize “the American dream.” A central part of the home-buying process is getting the right homeowners insurance. In fact, most lenders will not allow buyers to “close the deal” until the buyer proves that he or she has secured the right amount of homeowners insurance. However, during the complicated and costly process of buyinga home, many people see insurance as just one moreworry. This curriculum is designed to walkprospective and current homeowners through the steps to getting the best policy for their needs. A home is our greatest dream and greatest investment, and protecting this asset is one of the smartest financial decisions we can make. This module focuses on getting the right insurance to protect new responsibilities, namely homeowners insurance.

If you ask people to name their most valuable asset, most will tell you something like their house or car. But what most of us forget is that our life qualifies as our greatest asset. Most of us would prefer not to think about what will happen when we die and we hope that the day is a long way off. But life insurance does not benefit the person who dies. Instead, it offers protection for the people left behind: the beneficiaries. Life insurance can keep your family members and dependents from losing the earnings you would have provided them. Because life insurance passes through your estate, your beneficiaries will not be taxed on the money coming to them. Just by multiplying your annual income by the number of years you expect to work, you will see the great value you provide to the people who depend on you. Even if you are single have no dependents (and 40% of the US population falls in this category), you should consider whatever debts you might have — such as student loans, credit card debt, a mortgage, medical bills, etc. Adding in the cost of your funeral, which could run several thousand dollars, and you can see the potential burden that could fall on your loved ones. A life insurance policy is vital to anyone living and working on his or her ownThis module will teach you more about your options and get you started on the path to protecting your life: your most valuable asset.

Money Smart, an Adult Education Program is a comprehensive, bilingual banking and credit education curriculum sponsored by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The FDIC and ASPIRA share the same goal of empowering communities who have traditionally had little experience with financial institutions. Money Smart [89] is available for free in CD ROM from FDIC [294], soon the FDIC will offer an interactive version on-line. We believe that the youth and adult participants in these programs, especially those with little banking experience, can greatly benefit from this type of general financial education.
The purpose of this guide is to present a summary of Money Smart [89]as a financial literacy tool and to suggest how it can be used to support your programs. As part of our Community Wealth Development Initiative, ASPIRA is authorized to make use of the curriculum, which is brand neutral and is available at no cost. We encourage our Associates to use Money Smar [89]t to seek local sponsorship for financial education initiatives. Money Smart can also be incorporated into Aspira’s other financial literacy programs (such as the Insurance Education and the Entrepreneurship Development programs).
Money Smart is a financial literacy curriculum focusing on banking services and credit. It comes complete with an instructor’s guide, participant’s guide (containing the handouts and worksheets), slides and evaluation materials. The ten modules are as follows:
Currently, Money Smart is available on a CD-rom that contains a series of PDF files that can be printed and copied according to your needs. You can order the free CD Rom through the FDIC’s website [294] or request a copy from Irma Garcia [94] at the National Office of ASPIRA.
I. To Seek Local Funding:
ASPIRA trainers and staff will find Money Smart to be an excellent resource since it provides a comprehensive introduction to major financial. You may decide to approach local financial institutions to fund a series of financial literacy workshops using the Money Smart materials. The following series of steps may offer you some guidelines in terms of approaching potential funders:
a. Leverage your current banking relationship;
b. Evaluate your staff’s contacts at other banks, credit unions, credit card companies, savings and loans, lenders, investment or trading companies, car dealerships that provide financing, housing lenders, etc.
c. Determine who has an interest in reaching Latino community;
d. Investigate who might have interest in improving corporate image through funding community service.
e. Research whether institution has already developed financial education curriculum or already runs own program (in this case, you could offer to pilot their own curriculum).
f. Determine which institutions need help implementing bilingual programs or focusing specifically on the Latino market.
a. Aspira would use Money Smart as basis for program, requiring no commitment from funder to create materials;
b. Aspira is currently implementing three major financial education initiative supported through corporate sponsorship;
c. Aspira represents best means to reach Latino community, who rely on CBOs to provide information.
d. Your Associate has an outreach to X number of people;
e. This program will benefit the funder in the short term through enhancing reputation in community and providing indirect marketing opportunity, and in the long term through creating a more financially-secure customer base.
II. To Support Existing Programs
The Money Smart curriculum is unbranded (i.e. it has no corporate sponsor) and we are able to use it in conjunction with all of our financial education programs. Below are a few ideas for putting Money Smart to work in your classrooms:
However you choose to incorporate the Money Smart [89] curriculum, we believe that it will benefit the Aspira Association and our constituents. If you have questions or would like help requesting materials, please contact:
