LANSING, Mich. - New technology that will be used to read identification cards at border crossings between the United States and Canada will be demonstrated at Detroit's Ambassador Bridge.
Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land will join federal officials in a demonstration of the radio-frequency identification technology Wednesday at the port of Detroit.
The technology is designed to read passports and other documents such as Michigan's enhanced, optional driver's licences that will debut next year.
The optional licence will satisfy passport requirements for border crossings.
Land said Tuesday the optional, enhanced driver's licence will help keep traffic flowing smoothly at the border despite new federal regulations that begin June 1.
