Partnership
for Traffic Safety

- Seat
belts reduce the risk of fatal injury by 50%. Child safety seats
reduce the risk of death by 71% for infants and 54% for children,
ages 1 to 4. Seat belts saved over 13,000 Americans in 2001
(NHTSA 2003).
- It
is illegal in every state for persons under the age of 21 to
purchase and publicly possess alcoholic beverages. In support
of these laws, it is illegal for persons under 21 who have been
drinking to drive (NHTSA 2001).
- The
use-lose statutes make it illegal for anyone under the age of
21 to purchase, possess, transport, or consume alcohol (NHTSA
2001).
- The
mix of alcohol and roads will always yield trouble for drivers,
pedestrians and passengers. In 2002, an estimated 17,419 people
died from alcohol-related crashes - an average of one death
every 30 minutes. These deaths constitute 41% of hte 42,815
total traffic fatalities (MADD 2003).
- Alcohol
use is America's No.1 youth drug problem (MADD 2003).
- All
50 states now have zero tolerance laws, which make it illegal
for anyone under 21 to drive with any measureable amount of
alcohol (maximum of 0.02 BAC) in their bodies (MADD 2003).
